BHUBANESWAR: Odisha on Monday got its firstall-women post office with the Department of Posts converting the sub-post office on assembly premises to a women-only workplace.
Principal chief postmaster general S K Chakraborty inaugurated the women-only branch. "India Post supports the national efforts to bring gender equality by ensuring that women employees at various levels have a say in decision-making and management of post offices. The step will be a milestone in Odisha postal history," said senior superintendent of post offices (Bhubaneswar division) Aditya Kumar Nayak.
The post office has two staff members: the post master and a Group D employee. Earlier, two men were posted against these posts; they were replaced by women.
The office remains open from 10 am to 6 pm on all working days. It offers traditional and modern services such as booking of registered and Speed Post articles, post office savings bank service, national saving certificate, monthly income scheme, e-money order and e-payment of telephone bills. It is, however, a non-delivery post office, which means it doesn't distribute letters or parcels.
Sources said the department may open more such post offices in other divisions of the state. Odisha has 20 divisions. There are total 1,270 post offices in the state, including 35 head offices and 1,235 sub-post offices.
Postal officials said it is the eighth all-woman post office in the country. After India Post opened the first all-women post office in the country on the occasion of International Women's Day at Sastri Bhawan in New Delhi, similar initiative was replicated in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
