Postal Dept Launches Logistics Service in State

Chief postmaster-general of Andhra Pradesh Circle BV Sudhakar flagging off Logistics Post service at Dak Sadan at Abids in Hyderabad on Monday
HYDERABAD: Department of Posts has launched a new logistics service in four routes namely Hyderabad-Chennai, Hyderabad - Bangalore, Hyderabad-Adilabad and Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada at the General Post Office here on Monday.
‘’The logistics postal services play a vital role in rural areas in helping the farmers sell their produce,” said B V Sudhakar, Chief Post Master General.
Eight trucks have been launched to deliver parcels in different villages that come between the assigned locations. While there are postal services already functioning in the areas, there is no daily service that caters to the needs of all the villages between the source and the destination.
‘‘The best part about the service is that you can connect to any village between the three states,” said Sudhakar. While the turnover for the logistics service last year was Rs 14 crore, the Department of Posts hopes to make at least Rs 20 crore this year.
The capacities of the three vehicles are 3,  6 and 9 tonnes respectively and the minimum weight of the parcel for availing this service is 5 kg. The cost of the service to  different destinations is fixed unlike the previous services.
‘’Previously, we used to charge based on the weight of the package and the destination. But now, we have freezed the prices for the benefit of the farmers,’’ Sudhakar said. Also, the bus drivers will be provided a GPS system that keeps sending them the notifications about the packages to be delivered in different villages approaching in a particular route. This is to ensure that all the villages in the three states have access to the service.
Service to Keep Track of Clearance
India Post office is planning to launch a new service titled ‘Nanyata’ to keep track of the clearance of post boxes everyday. Every post box will now have a bar code that has to be scanned every time it is cleared. This way, the details of the clearance such as name of the post master, time and day will be directly stored in the website which can be tracked by the customers. All the post masters will be given smart phones for scanning the bar code. As of now, there are 7,000 post boxes in Hyderabad and the service will start from August.
