Good response to Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme: official

Postal Department to hold ‘melas’ to create awareness on it

The Postal Department of Srikakulam district is in a jubilant mood with the good response evoked by the recently launched Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme aimed to ensure attractive interest rate to benefit girls.

The scheme offers 9.1 per cent cumulative interest on savings. Parents who save Rs.1,000 per month for a span of 14 years would get Rs.6, 07,128 at the time of maturity. The amount can be used for marriage and study of the girl child. However, the scheme is limited for the girls who were born after December 2, 2003, according to Srikakulam Postal Superintendent Janapala Prasad Babu.

According to him, the department will organise exclusive ‘melas’ and campaign in villages to open at least 10,000 accounts by end of March, 2015.

“The parents can open an account under the scheme by visiting the nearest post office,” said Mr. Prasad Babu. “We are conducting training programmes for staff and agents to promote the scheme,” he added.

The department is also promoting postal life insurance which fetched around Rs.18 crore in the current financial year 2014-15. The scheme which was originally meant for government employees has been extended to employees of public sector, lecturers and teachers.

Srikakulam Postal Department has already set a new record with the highest collection of premium under the scheme.
We are conducting training programmes for staff and agents to promote the scheme
