UPU News: Committee chairs and vice-chairs prepare for Congress

Congress committee chairs and vice-chairs are preparing to lead the discussions at the upcoming 26th Universal Postal Congress with help from seminars in Berne this week.

On hand were UPU experts from strategy, logistics, development, operations, legal and financial affairs. From June 13-14, the experts coached chairs and vice-chairs on the Congress mission, strategy, structure, financing, issues and risks, among others, to help better prepare them for their roles as committee leaders.
"The success of a forum like Congress is determined by the level of preparation and focus of the leadership of deliberations,” said UPU Director General Bishar A. Hussein at the opening. “We need to define how we will work together as a team and lay the ground rules on how to tackle difficult or sensitive issues, and, at all times, work toward the consensus of members."
“This training session provides an essential knowledge-sharing exercise for chairs and vice-chairs and UPU staff,” added UPU Deputy Director General Pascal Clivaz.
At Congress, seven committees will carry out work on credentials, finance, general policy and management of the work of the Union, the UPU Convention, postal payment services, development cooperation and drafting the Acts of the Union.
As the host country, Turkey assumes the role of Congress Chair, with the support of four vice-chairs - one each from Belarus, China, Cuba and Kenya.
Representatives from Australia, Belarus, Belgium, China, France, India, Japan, Kenya, Morocco, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, South Africa and the United States participated in the sessions.
The 26th Universal Postal Congress will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 20 September – 7 October, 2016.
