Usually people who lend exceptional services to the society are commemorated by the postal department by releasing stamps with the person’s image in the background. Now common people can get close to enjoying such an honour, with the postal department introducing “My Stamp” scheme where people can get their photographs printed along with the stamp and use it for communication purposes.
“We generated `12 lakhs through this service,” informed BV Sudhakar, chief postmaster general, Andhra Pradesh circle while speaking on the occasion of World Postal Week, celebrated from October 9 to 15.
The chief postmaster informed that the World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 every year as it is the formation day of the Universal Postal Union in Berne, Switzerland.
Elaborating on the services of the postal department, he informed that the density of postal offices in Andhra Pradesh is very high. “Indian post has 1.55 lakh post offices with a staff strength of around 4,75,000. In the state, there are 16,142 post offices, with 92 per cent of them in rural and remaining 8 per cent in urban areas, with around 40,000 work force,” he informed.
Concerning the number of mails handled by the AP Circle, the chief postmaster said that in the year of 2011-12 the number of mails stood at 60 crore while in 2012-13 it increased to 75 crore and clarified that the myth of electronic media diminishing the services of postal department does not hold true. “In fact more number of common people and businessmen are opting for postal department services”. 1.57 crore MGNREGA accounts have been opened and wages to the tune of `10,624 crore were disbursed since February 2006.
Apart from that, in 14 districts of the state, Aadhar enabled payment scheme has been implemented for disbursing NREGA wages, as per a press release.
