Speed Post Bag Bungle Triggers Protest

CHENNAI: A woman panchayat chief on Wednesday staged a dharna at a post office in Tiruvallur district as a speedpost she had booked a month ago was not delivered till now. Sunitha Balayogi, president of Venkathur panchayat, said careless handing of the post could cost her dear as it contained original copies of her educational and community certificates.

A subsequent investigation by the postal department revealed that a bag containing 24 parcels, received at Manavala Nagar on October 21, has gone missing. An explanation has been sought from the staff responsible for transporting the parcels on that day.

Accompanied by about 30 locals, Sunitha picketed the Manavala Nagar postal office over the missing post. She also staged a dharna inside the office and gave up her protest only after being assured by the officials that they would investigate into the matter.

“I have booked the speed post on October 1 to send original copies of my certificates to a college in Bengaluru for enrollment in a course. I could not get admission as the parcel was not delivered even a after a month. Several people in my area also have similar complaints of parcels not being delivered for over a month after booking,” Sunitha told reporters.

Subsequent to the protest, a senior postal officer from Kancheepuram district visited the Manavala Nagar postal office and conducted an enquiry. “We found that a bag, containing 24 parcels booked from the Manavala Nagar postal office on October 1 is missing. Using the tracking number, we tried to locate if the parcels had reached any other centre in the country. But unfortunately we are not successful in locating the parcels,” a top postal officer told Express.

He said an explanation has been sought from the staff transporting the bag on that particular day.

Meanwhile, three postal department staff working in the Ammaiyar Kuppam  postal office were suspended on Wednesday after it was found that several postal letters and parcels were dumped in a garbage bin in the locality.
