User-friendly facility eludes city

The wait of thousands of India Post customers for Core Banking Solutions (CBS) in Ahmedabad seems far from ending as the launch of use-friendly facility is delayed by eight months. The department was supposed to launch the new age banking system in March this year. Last year, the post offices in the city were asked to meet their targets of 20 lakh savings accounts to generate revenue for the facility. The idea was to launch CBS at the start of new financial year, that is, in 2014. "We were asked to visit neighbourhoods to convince people to open accounts.

The exercise was aimed at collecting revenue for the new high-tech system. We have been attending training sessions and workshops since November last year to understand the management and technological aspects of the new age work culture. But a year later, the scheme is yet to be launched," said a source in the postal department. City's prominent post offices worked towards upgrading their services that could be offered through CBS, including offering loans, ATM facility, internet banking and centralised Know Your Customer (KYC).

In fact, ATM booths too have been constructed by some post offices. This includes General Post Office (GPO) on Relief Road and Navrangpura post office. However, the scheme is yet to be launched. "We were asked to be ready. So we completed all arrangements. ATM booths have been constructed and employees are learning technical operations and software. But uncertainty over the launch still prevails," said an employee at GPO.

According to sources, the research and development took longer than necessary which caused the delay. But the officials do not feel the launch is really delayed. "It is not possible to launch such a big scheme just like that. We had no data or figures to make arrangements, nor was the software ready. But we are launching it in Bhavnagar this month. Ahmedabad is next in line. Hopefully, it will be introduced before the year end," said B K Mehta, senior superintendent at postal department's city division office.
