Respect key element in employee retention: Survey

BENGALURU: Respect is a key element that helps companies retain their employees, according to the second annual list of Asia's Best Workplaces by United States headquartered consulting and research firm Great Place to Work.

The list is based on a survey of 18,86,543 employees across 1,064 companies spread over nine countries. As per the survey, the employees of the top 60 employers indicated that respectful treatment — in the form of providing basic equipment for the job, welcoming staff suggestions and recognising good work — is central to their desire to remain with their companies.

The list divides companies into three categories — Best Multinational Workplaces, Best Small & Medium Workplaces (50-500 employees) and Best Large Workplaces (more than 500 employees).

DHL tops the list of best multinational workplaces, followed by Omnicom and Google. The other companies among the top 10 in this category are EMC, Marriott, NetApp, Hyatt, MARS, American Express and SAP. Salesforce has ranked first among the 25 best small and medium workplaces, followed by Optiver Australia and The Physio Co. The top three companies among best large workplaces are Atlassian, MECCA Brands and RMSI.

Organisations featuring on the best workplaces list are assessed in two main ways, said Prasenjit Bhattacharya, CEO, Great Place to Work Institute. Employees at the organisations anonymously complete the trust index survey, which measures levels of trust, pride and camaraderie in the workplace; and organisations complete the culture audit, an indepth evaluation of their people practices, he said.

"Increasingly, organisations are reaching out to us to get assessed as a first step in their journey towards building a high-performance great workplace culture," said Bhattacharya.

The survey shows that a great workplace is not specific to any particular industry. This year's list includes companies from information technology, financial services and insurance, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, hospitality, education and training, transportation and media.

Along with respect, the survey found that pride at work and the management's credibility also figure among the factors considered vital for employee retention
