UPU/WMO MOU signed in New York
Meteorological services and postal networks join forces
On the occasion of the fall session of the Chief
Executives Board held in New York, Mr A. Bishar Hussein, Director
General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), and Mr Michel Jarraud,
Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), signed
a cooperation agreement. The WMO is the UN specialized agency
responsible for meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology
and related geophysical sciences.
The partnership aims to help postal services
address disaster risk reduction challenges and increase their level of
preparedness through better targeted and tailored weather and climate
information in the face of natural disasters.
"The UPU and WMO are among the oldest
international agencies, created before the UN system was set up. They
became UN specialized agencies in the late 40s and early 50s. For more
than a century, they have cooperated to provide the best possible public
goods and services to the world community", said Mr Jarraud, adding
that "this partnership reaffirms the solid foundation of a common
interest to cooperate even further to maintain high quality services in
the face of climate change and the impact of natural hazards. The
agreement will go a long way in supporting the universal integrated 2030
development agenda".
Mr Hussein declared that "through this joint
effort between our organizations, meteorological services and postal
networks are joining forces to build synergies and develop better use of
climate and weather information and predictions". He said the
cooperation would make postal operators improve their resilience to
natural disasters and better plan their operations, adding that "through
this partnership, the Post can also play an important role in
facilitating access to meteorological information to local communities
and developing early warning systems".
