Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne released here on Saturday a commemorative
postage stamp and first day cover to mark the golden jubilee of the
prestigious Armed Forces Medical College's (AFMC) graduate wing.
The AFMC graduate wing was established in 1962 with a purpose of rolling out highly qualified and trained doctors for the armed forces of India. It has since emerged as one of the most sought-after MBBS colleges in the country with admissions conducted on an all India entrance exam basis.
"The graduate wing has so far produced 6,000 highly qualified doctors, who have shown their excellence on field while working with the three wings of the armed forces," AFMC dean and deputy commandant Major General Manoj Luthra said.
General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army Southern Command Lt Gen A K Singh spoke on the occasion about the southern command's deep-rooted relations with the AFMC. "We have supported the AFMC in all things that they needed so far," he said.
Pune post-master general Col K C Mishra said, "The department of posts, which normally reserves commemorative postage stamps for momentous occasions like centenary or bi-centenary years, has made an exception with the AFMC graduate wing, which has completed 50 years. In a way, it signifies that what can be achieved in 100 years has been achieved in 50 years by the AFMC."
Commandant of AFMC Air Marshal S S Joneja, adjutant general J K Mehra, India Post's director of philately Meera Handa, dirctor generals of medical services for air force, army and navy and other senior officers from the services were present.
