Online shopping facility now available in rural Kashmir

e-commerce companies tie-up with postal department for product deliver

SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 06

The online shopping from major e-commerce companies like Snapdeal, Amazon is now available for rural areas of Kashmir which otherwise was confined to few areas in Srinagar only.
 
However, the companies will be dispatching the product to customers in the rural areas in Valley through only postal department.
 
 “We want to ship our products to each corner of the world with the free return option,” said a senior Amazon official over phone.
 
Presently, electronic and clothing items are accessible for shipping in rural areas of Kashmir.
 
“We will make more products accessible to rural areas very soon,” said a Snapdeal, customer care executive.
 
The Amazon official said the move has been taken jointly by e-commerce companies and Indian Postal Service.
 
“Courier service facility is not available in many rural areas which have compelled us to take the help of Indian Speed Post,” he said.
 
Imitiyaz, a student from Tral, said that he had purchased many products from Amazon.
 
The students and youth have expressed happiness over the facilities as they have started ordering the products.
 
Mueed, a resident from Awantipora said he was happy to have online shopping available in his area.
 
“Online shopping gives us options also to shop from home. We have all kinds of brands available,” said Mueed.
 
Flipkart and ebay officials said that only books are accessible to rural areas of Kashmir.
 
“Shipping of more products will be possible only when courier companies will start services,” said customer care executives of the companies.
 
However, the cash on deliver facility is not available for rural areas.
 
Some of the frequent online shoppers have also complained of receiving damaged and substandard products.
 
 “I recently ordered L size shirt from Snapdeal but I received XL size. I approached India Post who were reluctant to help me,” Rayiq Nazir, from Pulwama said.
 
In India, online shopping is done from the websites like Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal, eBay, Yepme, Infibeam, Jabong, Myntra, etc.
 
The online shopping facilities seem to have hit the local shopkeepers.
 
Ashiq Hussain, an official at Samsung mobile retailer, in Lal Chowk many people prefer to buy mobiles online which have kept lower rates.
