Writing letters promoted stamp collection. But just because not too many people write letters now, it does not mean stamp collection has come down, says Postmaster General, Western Region, Manju P. Pillai.
Ms. Pillai told The Hindu that the department is taking steps to revive philately clubs in schools and is also organising letter writing contests among students.
“We are trying to promote philately in a big way,” she says. When students take on philately, they can become members of the philately bureau, have a philately account and become part of a network.
In the last one year, the department has brought out several postal covers on the local fauna, flora and heritage buildings.
Even in countries such as the U.S. and China there is a revival of philately because it is seen an investment option. And Tamil Nadu has had some eminent philatelists.
The State will organise Tanapex 2016 in Chennai in January next year and this will bring together the philatelists from different parts of the country. The department will organise workshops in schools in every division as a prelude to the event.
Coimbatore region has 3,600 live philately accounts and the total number of accounts in the State is 17342.
The department earned Rs. 9 lakh revenue from philately between April and August this year.
It has also brought out a range of philately collectibles. There are mugs, photo frames, jute bags, etc. that have images of stamps.
These can be gifted too and are available at the Head Post Office here, says Ms Pillai.
