Postal department honours 6 legendary actresses

Six legendary actresses like Meena Kumari, Nutan, Kanan Devi, Devika Rani, Leela Naidu and Savitri Devi are being honoured with the issuance of postage stamps to coincide with the week-long Indipex 2011 Philately exhibition in the capital.

This makes the total number of stamps on film personalities issues so far to just over twenty, even as the film industry is completing one hundred years of its existence next year.

The first postage stamp to honour a film personality was issued on 30 April 1971, when a 20 paisa stamp was released to mark the birth centenary of Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian Cinema.

Earlier stamps have also been issued to honour directors Bimal Roy, Mehboob Khan, Ritwik Ghatak and music director SD Burman. Besides these, the Department of Posts has also issued stamps of personalities like Prithviraj Kapoor, Kundan Lal Saigal, Satyajit Ray, Dinanath Mangeshkar, V Shantaram, Gemini Ganesan, Talat Mehmood, Hemant Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Raj Kapoor, Mukesh, Begum Akhtar and Guru Dutt, and actresses Nargis Dutt and Madhubala.

Alongside, an exhibition of stamps was inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil this morning.
