Is the sense of commitment fast disappearing?

In order to triumphantly face the changing market and customer demands, it is most important for them to retain a sense of commitment towards their job and assignments.
With numerous fluctuations and changes plaguing the market every day, it is essential that employees remain focused and attentive at all times. The only way to sell any idea or product in the consumerist environment of today is by reassuring the customer that you are willing to go an extra mile to satisfy and please them. But the present scenario suggests that this sense of commitment is fast disappearing among employees.
When the company has already committed to paying the employees big bucks, what stops the latter from giving their best? Many argue that the modern notions of work-life balance are used as a lifeline by employees, grabbing which they escape any sort of emotional attachment to their workplace. But this obvious absence of employee engagement today is not a healthy trait. It is absolutely critical for every member of an organisation to fully understand and appreciate his job as well as the company mottos in order to commit himself to his assigned tasks. Sunil Goel, director, GlobalHunt, elaborates, "A sense of commitment always comes from within. From an organisation's perspective, a person who has this sense always keeps on identifying new avenues and shows accountability to lead the company towards success. Any individual who has taken up a job for employment only will have merely a need-based commitment. But an individual who is genuinely interested in the job and has a liking towards it, will  not require any external force to complete projects and official work. Such people are the real drivers of success in an organisation."
The companies of today are working fervently towards promoting a sense of belonging among its employees and helping them connect emotionally to their jobs and their workplace, be it through incentives or through appreciation. Kalpana Jaishankar, group head - HR, Mastek, tells us about their efforts, "The needs and aspirations of Gen Y are different and everybody needs to understand, acknowledge and respond to the same. Employee Engagement continues to be meaningful only if it can address issues they care about – like flexi-time, work from home, direct feedback, etc.
Employees today do want to be recognised for their contribution in cash and in words. The recognition and reward has to be done in a timely manner and the amount has to be meaningful. Apart from that, employees need to be given more responsibility as at most times they feel that their potential is not being completely harnessed. But it is essential to understand that employees themselves also have a responsibility and must keep their motivation levels high. Good work will never go unacknowledged."
Hence, in order to rise in the echelons of their career, employees need to put in their best efforts in their jobs and give their hundred percent at all times. Completing a task merely for the sake of completing it will never prompt success; on the other hand, going out of the way to accomplish the task in a better manner will show to your superiors that the profit of the company is your top priority.
Inculcating this sense will thus, lead you to lead a more satisfactory and triumphant professional life.
