Armed with water cannons and liquid tear gas, police fired on 10,000 Korean workers and their families marching to a Hanjin Heavy Industries shipyard on July 9-10 in an effort to squash growing support for laid off workers and members of the Korean Metal Worker' Federation protesting mass-dismissals (in breach of a job security agreement) since December 2010. KIM, Jinsuk, who has been holding an aerial sit-in strike at the shipyard's crane 85 since January, has been increasingly blocked from accessing food, medical care and basic necessities (heat, light). Arrest warrants for union leaders have been issued and some 50 supporters were arrested and released in the last 48 hours. The company is suing for 5.3 billion won in damages. Under Koreaˇs Penal Code 314, or "Obstruction of Business", companies are allowed to file criminal charges and seek imprisonment or damages claims against individuals and unions taking legitimate industrial action. Join the global call to demand an end to the violence in Korea and a respect for human dignity and basic rights of workers and citizens.
