The special camp organised to promote the recently introduced Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA) of the Department of Posts evoked overwhelming response.
About 100 accounts were opened under the SSA scheme on the first day of the three-day camp organised by the Salem East Postal Division at the Head Post Office here on Wednesday.
R. S. D. Wahida Banu, principal, Government College of Engineering, Salem, inaugurated the camp, in the presence of the senior officials of the department. The SSA can be opened by the parents and guardians of girl children, till she attains the age of ten years. The account could be opened in the name of the girl child born on or after December 2, 2003, with an initial deposit of Rs. 1,000.
Ms. Wahida Banu said that the new scheme would be a boon to all sections of society and urged people to take full advantage of it.
Postal Department sources said that the scheme was launched in the country in January and since then more than 1,500 people had opened the accounts in the Salem East Postal Division.
A similar three-day camp to create awareness among people on the scheme commenced in Attur Head Post Office on Wednesday.
