BANGALORE: Corrupt babus working for various central government agencies in the state will now be under the Lokayukta scanner. The Anti Corruption Bureau director, through a notification addressed to all the states, has given powers to Lokayukta to nab corrupt central government employees in the state.
Hitherto, the Lokayukta's jurisdiction was limited only to state government employees.
Armed with this new notification, the Lokayukta will now be able to bring under its purview the railways, banks, telecom, post and telegraph, customs and central excise departments. "If central government employees demand bribe, aggrieved can complain to the Lokayukta, which will lay a trap to nab them. In case they are caught red-handed, the case will be handed over to CBI for further investigation,'' officials added.
The CBI, which is facing manpower crunch and communication bottlenecks, has decided to delegate some of its powers to Lokayukta to nip corruption in central government offices.
Previously, an aggrieved person from any corner of the state was compelled to personally visit the state headquarters to complain to the CBI about a corrupt central government employee. CBI officials, too, found it hard to visit far-off places to act on such complaints.
Lokayukta officials said that instructions have been passed on to all the Lokayukta offices in the state to keep an eye on all corrupt babus.
