Postal employees on strike for clarity on pay commission

NASHIK: Around 1,000 postal department employees in Nashik division went on a two-day strike on Wednesday. The employees have 15 demands including the declaration of the structure of the seventh pay commission before the Lok Sabha election code of conduct is enforced.

"Employees in all the central offices of the department across the country are on strike. We want 50% of our dearness allowance to be merged with our basic pay. Also, the gramin dak sevaks should be made permanent employees of the department and brought under the seventh pay commission. We also need clarity on the structure of the seventh pay commission," the Gramin Dak Seva (GDS) Nashik divisional secretary Sunil Jagtap said.

"We have submitted our demands to our director general in Delhi," he added.

Jagtap further said though the seventh pay commission has been approved it is not clear what the government is giving the employees. "We want them to declare the structure now. If they do not do so, it will have to be done by the next government and that will take another year. That is why we want the structure to be declared before the code of conduct is imposed," Jagtap said.

The strike is being observed by 455 employees under the National Federation of Postal Employees (NFPE) and 400 employees of FNPO Federation of National Postal Organization (FNPO). Around 25 employees of the Bharatiya Dak Sangh have not observed the strike.
