Chief Postmaster General of Andhra Circle B.V. Sudhakar on Sunday urged the postal staff to educate people on the series of robust schemes launched by the Department of Posts.

Addressing the staff after participating in a Swachh Bharat drive launched at the Postal Colony located in the lane adjacent to M&M showroom on Bandar Road, Mr. Sudhakar said a good number of technology-driven schemes were grounded to enable people at the grass root level to benefit from them. It was for the staff to take them to people, he emphasised.

Mr. Sudhakar joined the 52 families of the department employees residing at the place in the clean-up drive and asked them to repeat the act at least once every month.

Referring to the ‘Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana’, launched as part of the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign of the BJP Government at the Centre, Mr. Sudhakar explained that it was a girl child prosperity scheme under which, an interest of 9.1 per cent was provided on deposited amount which was tax-free. “A savings account can be opened by the parent or legal guardian of a girl child of less than 10 years of age with a minimum deposit of Rs 1,000 in any post office or authorised branches of commercial bank. Partial withdrawal up to 50 per cent of the account balance is allowed to meet education expenses of the girl child till she attains 18 years. The account will remain operative for 21 years from the date of opening of the account or till marriage of the girl child,” he said.

Compound interest

He said compounded interest rate on the deposited money was an attractive feature of the scheme.

Elaborating on ‘Nanyatha’ programme, yet another scheme operated using Android software to monitor the letter box clearance system, he said it was aimed at helping people know the status of their letters dropped in the box and the functioning of the delivery system in the postal network through internet.
