KOLLAM, April 8, 2015
People from all walks of life joined hands with postal employees and their families to form a human chain from Chinnakada to the taluk office junction here on Tuesday evening to register protest against the Central government attempt to privatise the postal sector.
The programme was organised by postal employees under the banner of the National Federation of Postal Employees (NFPE) and the Federation of National Postal Organisations. After keeping the human chain intact for more than 30 minutes, they gathered in front of the Kollam Head Post Office for a protest meeting.
CPI(M) district secretary K.N. Balagopal, MP, who inaugurated the meeting, said that the Postal Department was one of the oldest government departments in the country. It provided employment to more than 5 lakh people and after Railways, it was the biggest public-sector employer.
He said that the Postal Department had huge assets too. It was such a prized possession in the public sector that the Central government wanted to hand over to the private sector. If privatised, not only would the job security of the employees be at stake, there would also be a question mark on the efficiency of services.
