XX Commonwealth Games, 2014
The XX Commonwealth Games were hosted by Glasgow, Scotland from 23 July to 3 August,2014. 71 different nations and territories with around 4950 athletes. participated in this multi-sport event in 17 different sports. The event came to an end on the 3rd August, Sunday night with a colorful ceremony at the Hampden park, Scotland’s National Stadium. India earned a fifth place in the tally with 64 medals, including 15 gold, 30 silver and 19 bronze medals. England topped the list with 171 medals followed by Australia 135 medals and Canada 82 medals. Host Country Scotland finished with 53 medals.
As expected, India performed well in shooting, wrestling, boxing and weight- lifting events. In squash, Dipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa created history by winning Commonwealth Gold in squash for India for the first time. Parupalli Kashyap also created a landmark by winning gold in Badminton Men’s singles after 32 years.
The performance of India in Commonwealth Games inspires hopes of a good show and decent medal haul in 2016 Olympics. The next Commonwealth Games will be held in Australia.
India hosted the event in 2010. To commemorate the occasion, India Post had released a series of stamps.
