HYDERABAD: Starting November, post offices in the state will issue special darshan tickets for various temples including  Tirumala and Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada among others.

“Instead of standing in queues, people can directly go to their nearest post office and book tickets for darshan,’’ chief postmaster general B V Sudhakar has said.

Andhra Pradesh Postal Circle, Hyderabad, on Wednesday launched ‘Same Day Delivery Parcel Service’ from selected post offices in the twin cities such as Hyderabad GPO, Humayun Nagar, Himayatnagar, Malakpet, Saroornagar, Himmatnagar and Malkajgiri.

Speaking on the occasion Sudhakar said parcels will be delivered on the same day anywhere in the city.

‘‘We deliver up to 22 lakh letters per day. So far, we did not have any service that delivers parcels on the same day. We are also working towards single day delivery for speed posts as well,” Sudhakar said.

As of now, the speed post service is available only at six post offices and would be expanded to other post offices in the city.

G John Samuel, Member of Operations, Postal Services Board, who was the chief guest at the event, said that the department is doing its best to cope up with the e-commerce market. ‘‘During Diwali, we had requests from a lot of e-commerce players asking us to deliver the product on the same day. Though a lot of e-commerce firms are currently opting private courier services, Samuel said that the trends are changing. “Almost all the e-commerce players, big or small have been utilizing our services. We have also signed a deal with two major online firms recently and are in negotiations with others,’’ he said further adding that “During Diwali, our volumes have doubled up.”

Speaking about the digital postal offices with automatic mail processing systems, that sorts up to 45,000 letters a day, Samuel said “We are starting this to cater to the needs of our digital customers.
