CHENNAI,
July 5, 2015
For the past three days, postal customers in the city
are getting a feel of the digital services offered by the Department of
Posts through a series of activities as part of the Digital India week.
On
Friday, customers were given a demonstration of how to use digital
lockers launched early this week. Such demonstrations were held in many
post offices, including at the Anna Road Head Post Office, in
collaboration with the National Informatics Centre. The digital locker
facility aims at minimising use of physical documents. Besides saving
government documents online, people just need to share their locker
number, postal officials said.
The department is also
focussing on creating awareness on the e-complaints facility among
customers and core banking solutions network. In the last three months,
about 13,000 online complaints have been received in the Chennai city
region. Every divisional office will also conduct grievances redress
meetings on July 7.
Mervin Alexander, Postmaster
General (CCR) said: “Nearly 95 per cent of the articles handled by post
offices can be tracked online. In May alone, nearly 16,000 parcels and 3
lakh speed posts were delivered to various destinations. We plan to
step up awareness on the e-services offered by the post offices.”
About
7-8 lakh electronic money orders are being booked and delivered in post
offices in the city region. One of the objectives for the Digital India
Week celebrations is to encourage customers to link savings bank
account and postal life insurance policies with Aadhaar numbers. The
department plans to hold a meeting with e-commerce stakeholders to
discuss ways to expand its delivery services.
