Soon, post office will go to people

Come November, you will get postal services at your doorstep. The Department of Posts, Pune, will have a ‘post office on wheels’, a mobile van that will offer a variety of postal services to people.
The project will be replicated at other places depending on the success of a pilot project in the city. Over 90 local post offices, under whose jurisdiction the mobile van would tour, will have their representatives at the locations to help facilitate transactions and to assist employees deputed in the van. The team will have a postmaster and an assistant, besides the driver.
“We will offer different postal services such as booking of speed post, registered post and money orders among others through ‘post office on wheels’. Citizens can also have access to savings, postal life insurance, philately products and other value added services operated by India Post. The idea is to take postal services to people who are not able to access it easily. It will also serve as a sales and marketing initiative,” said Postmaster General (Pune region) Col KC Mishra on Thursday.
Talking about other initiatives for the National Postal Week (October 9-14), Mishra announced the opening of 19 franchisee postal outlets, including seven for Pune city, by the end of October.
Special arrangements for quick disposal of Diwali mails at 10 identified post offices in the city, extending hours of multipurpose counters at these post offices, seven new post offices in Pune city in the next few months, were among many initiatives announced to ensure the postal department reaches out to a larger number of people. Kalyani Nagar, Sahakar Nagar and Anand Nagar are among the city areas where new post offices are be expected to come up.
