Foundation stone of the new postal office
building was symbolically unveiled by director postal services, Nagaland
division, Som Kamei on Sunday. Union minister for communication & IT, Ravi
Shankar Prasad meanwhile inaugurated the core banking services for Agartala
head post office at Agartala, while through video conference the minister
unveiled the foundation stone for Dimapur new postal office.
During video conference the minister
said that post offices in India were playing the “crucial role” for vast
connectivity with all parts of the state, adding that postal services have made
their “successful imprints” in the country.
At the symbolic programme held in
Dimapur, Kamei in his welcome address said that the day was a “significant day
for the postal department” due to the launching of the new office building
through video conference and unveiling of the foundation stone.
Kamei informed that the old post
office building had been demolished more than a decade ago and recounted that
over the years the department had tried its best to revive the postal
department building. Since Dimapur is the commercial hubbub of Nagaland, he
said it does the maximum postal business than even the head office at Kohima.
Kamei said the need for a proper
office infrastructure with state of the art facilities prompted the department
to approach the union minister concerned, who had readily agreed to revive the
project.
The director informed that presently
only the head office at Kohima had the core banking service (CBS) platform but
expressed hope that, by the next three months more post offices will have CBS
platform. He said by the end of financial year all district post offices would
be on CBS platform.
He also mentioned that for the first
time, an employee of Nagaland postal services, system administrator John Angami
was awarded the national level Meghdoot award by the concerned ministry. Kamei
further elaborated that John had single handedly installed the CBS platform
without technical help from outside.
Kamei mentioned about the many
complaints faced by the department when it came to parcels coming inside
Nagaland from other metro cities. To alleviate this problem, he said that the
department has now tied up with Indigo which would be time saving by at least
36 hours.
At present there is one head office
in the postal department, 42 sub offices and 287 branch offices spread out even
in rural areas within Nagaland.
Other dignitaries also spoke briefly
while vote of thanks was given by superintendent of post offices (Hq) Kohima,
K. I. Singh.
