Cyclonic Storm ‘ROANU’ Over West Central Bay of Bengal

                       The cyclonic storm ‘ROANU’ over west central Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary and lay centred at 1130 hrs IST of today, the 19^th May, 2016 near latitude 15.6º N and longitude 81.6 ºE, about 80 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, about 290 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam & 160 km south-southwest of Kakinada. The system is likely to move initially north-north eastwards along and off Andhra Pradesh coast during next 12 hours, thereafter north eastwards. The system is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by tonight. Continuing moving north eastwards, the system is likely to cross south Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Cox’s Bazar in the night of 21^st & early morning of 22^nd May as a cyclonic storm.

Rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places very likely over coastal Odisha during next 24 hours and heavy to very heavy falls at few places on 20 May and isolated heavy on 21^st May. 

Rainfall at most places with isolated heavy falls very likely over Telangana and Rayalaseema during next 24 hours.  

Wind warning: Wind speed reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph is very likely to prevail along and off North Andhra Pradesh coasts during next 12 hours and speed reaching 100-110 gusting to 120 kmph during next 36 hours. 

Squally wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph is very likely to commence over south Odisha coast tonight and wind speed reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph from tomorrow morning. 

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is very likely to prevail along and off north Tamil Nadu & Puducherry during next 24 hours. 

Sea condition along and off Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts: Sea condition is very likely to be high to very high, along and off Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts during next 48 hours. It is very likely to be rough to very rough along & off North Tamil Nadu coast during next 24 hours. 

Sea condition is very likely to be high to very high along and off West Bengal coast on 20 and 21 May.

Expected Storm surge:

Storm surge of about 0.5 to 1.0 metre is likely along Andhra Pradesh coast during next 24 hours. 

Damage expected

Damage to thatched huts, Minor damage to power and communication lines and Major damage to kutcha and minor damage to pucca roads over coastal Andhra Pradesh during next 48 hours and over south coastal Odisha from tonight onwards. 

Action suggested:  

Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea along & off Andhra Pradesh coast during the next 48 hours, along & off North Tamil Nadu coast during next 24hours and along & off Odisha coast from today night onwards
