The government today said the Department of Posts has registered an increase of 8.8 per cent in revenues to Rs 6,705.64 crore in 2009-10, as compared to the previous fiscal. "The Department of Posts has earned Rs 5,761.22 crore in revenues in 2007-08, Rs 6,163.15 crore in 2008-09 and Rs 6,705.64 crore in 2009-10," Minister of State for Communications and IT Gurudas Kamat said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

To another question, Kamat said the government has set up 1,082 postal franchise outlets (FOs) in urban and other areas, where there is need and demand for postal counter facilities but the Department is unable to open post offices.

To yet another question, Kamat replied that there are about 20,570 post offices running in rented buildings. "The financial targets earmarked under 'Purchase of Land' activity during the current Five Year Plan period is Rs 6.39 crore to purchase 15 plots," he added.

The funds are utilized to purchase plots from State governments or development authorities and in areas where the Department has a difficulty in hiring premises to house post offices.
