Postal department fined for deficiency of service

KANPUR: The Consumer Protection Forum has ordered chief post master of general post office to pay Rs 10,000 to complainant Mohd Asif Khan as damages within 30 days for deficiency of service. Asif Khan of Babupurwa had alleged that he was unable to appear in judicial services examination owing to deficiency of service on the part of postal department.

Asif stated that he sent application form through speed post on May 4, 2010 to MP High Court Jabalpur which was rejected as it had reached after May 12, the last date of receiving application form. When he sought the reason behind the delay, the post master said that a probe was underway. He sought a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh. Chief post master denied any fault on the part of postal department Kanpur and sought dismissal of complaint.

Presiding judges LB Sing (president) and Ganesh Prasad & Sunita Bala Awasthi (members) observed that Speed post delivery must be done in three days. But in present case it was done. Therefore postal department was responsible for the delay which amounted to deficiency of services.
