20.04.2016 - UPU Director General Bishar A. Hussein today called upon UPU member countries to consider other means to finance the organization instead of the current voluntary class of contribution mechanism.
Hussein, who was addressing a meeting of PostEurop in Yerevan,
Armenia, said the current method was risky and did not guarantee
financial sustainability of the Union.
“It is high time we considered the financial stability of our Union,
one that is guaranteed and on which plans for projects can be made,” he
said. “I would like to urge all UPU member countries to consider
changing our funding mechanism in line with those of other UN bodies.”
He said a recent risk analysis by the organization has identified the current funding method as one of the key risks facing it.
Hussein, who was accompanied at the meeting by Deputy Director
General Pascal Clivaz, also urged PostEurop members to support reform
proposals that will be discussed later in the year at the Universal
Postal Congress in Istanbul, Turkey. He said reforms will bring more
efficiency and cost effectiveness in the management of the Union for the
benefit of members.
“The Council of Administration approved a comprehensive Reform of the
Union agenda that will be presented to Congress,” he said. “I would
urge you to support these proposals.”
Earlier, Hussein met with the President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan,
discussing issues relating to the development of postal business.
