GURGAON: The department of posts has finally removed the anomaly in the Speed Post service from Gurgaon to Delhi. All Speed Post mails to and from GurgaonFaridabadNoida and Delhi will now be treated as localwhich means a mail to the capital from the city will cost Rs 17.
Earlier sending a Speed Post mail from Gurgaon to Delhi would cost Rs 39 though those in Delhi would be charged just Rs 17 for the same service.
This discrepancy was first highlighted by Palam Vihar resident Aseem Takyarwho had filed a PIL in the Punjab and Haryana high court in September 2013. Acting on the PILthe court had asked the department to rectify the anomaly. When it was not donethe court issued a contempt notice.
In a notification issued on February 20the department said the National Capital Region is being developed by the government as one industrial and economic hub in order to promote integration of the entire region."In view of thisthe competent authority has decided that Speed Post articles booked in and destined for the Delhi urban agglomerationwhich includes Delhi NCTNoida townshipGurgaonGhaziabad and Faridabad municipal areas of the national capital regionwould be treated as 'local' for determining Speed Post tariff," the notification said.
Takyar welcomed the movesaying it was a victory for the common man. . Now that the corrective measure has been takenI want the department to refund the crores of rupees it has charged fraudulently from Gurgaon residents.
"I can't understand why city residents were being forced to cough up Rs 22 more to use the same Speed Post service. I am glad that better sense has prevailed," he said.
