The Department of Posts on Wednesday released a special
cover on Dr. Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama to commemorate the
20 years of the nisargadhama.
The cover released in
the office of the Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim showed the
traditional ‘guttu mane’ (traditional manor house) in the nisargadhama
in the front side.
Components
On
the back, there is brief description about the nisargadhama and its
various components – in English and Hindi along with the licence number
issued by Karnataka Postal Circle, Bengaluru.
The
nisargadhama, located 10 km away from the city, is spread over an area
of 356 acres and dedicated to conservation of bio-diversity of the
Western Ghats, heritage and culture, creation of awareness in science
and technology and promotion of tourism.
It was
released in the presence of M. Jagadish Pai, Senior Superintendent of
Post Offices, Mangaluru Division, S.A. Prabhakar Sharma, executive
director of the nisargadhama.
Mr. Pai said that one
of the special covers released would be preserved at the museum of
National Philately Bureau, Dak Bhavan, New Delhi for posterity. This was
fifth special cover to be released in Karnataka since January this
year.
Mr. Sharma said the cover was dedicated to
promote eco-tourism and creation of awareness about environment and
traditional cultural practices.
He said that the
nisargadhama had kept 250 special covers in its possession. Noting that
the covers have a collector’s item valued and treasured by philatelists,
Mr. Sharma said this cover would also be kept on display at the General
Post Office in Bengaluru.
Mr. Ibrahim suggested Mr. Sharma to send a proposal to India Post to bring out a stamp on the nisargadhama.
