ALLAHABAD: Department of Post has set up 10 post offices for Maha Kumbh 2013 to provide essential postal services to pilgrims in the mela area. All the post offices started functioning from January 1.
On the occasion, Krishna Kumar Yadav director, postal services, Allahabad flagged off formal functioning of post offices by booking a Speed Post article on speed net at the Central Kumbh Mela Post Office on Parade ground.
Yadav said the post offices will provide services to seers, pilgrims in the mela area. A gazetted officer of Group 'B' level has been nominated mela adhikari (Post) to ensure smooth services.
This year, 10 post offices and four mobile post offices have been established in 14 sectors.
Central Post Office has been established in the Parade area while others at Sangam North, Sangam South, Sangam Central, Gangadip, Fort road, Parade West, Arail, Jhusi and Jhusi South.
The post offices will provide service of booking of speed post, registered post, money order, parcel, philately, PLI and RPLI etc. Besides providing services to the pilgrims, it will also be a source of revenue for the department.
In the Kumbh Mela postal articles including parcel, money orders, letters, etc will be delivered through the Central Post Office while booking and delivery of speed post and registered post will be through Speed Net/R Net.
14 letters boxes have been installed in different prominent areas of the mela territory to collect mails posted by pilgrims.
Mail motor service has been provided to ensure swift transmission of mails between Allahabad RMS and Kutchery head post office.
Around 52 officials including supervisors and administrative officers have been deployed in the mela area for postal services. Mobile post offices on boats at the Sangam will facilitate pilgrims to shoot letters while taking a holy dip and pilgrims can even avail of water proof envelopes.
Department of Posts will register these letters by using special stamps and arrange to dispatch their destination the same day.
Yadav said department of posts was going to release six special covers with cancellation on different occasions i.e. Makar Sankaranti (January 14), Paush Purnima (January 27) Mauni Amavasya (February 10), Basant Panchmi (February 15), Magh Purnima (February 25) and Mahashivratri (March 10).
The special covers will depict the legend of Kumbh and important bathing occasions. Although the special cover has been released on the occasion previously too, it is the first time the department is going to release separate special covers. Crores of national and international devotees would be able to take home these envelopes as a souvenir.
During the inauguration, Ashok Srivastava, Kumbh Mela Adhikari (Post), Rahmatullah, SSPOs Allahabad, AP Tiwari, SSRM Allahabad, Madhusudan Mishra, assistant director and RN Yadav assistant director were also present.
