Assam postal circle expects revenue jump

GUWAHATI, Sept 18 – After witnessing a fall in its annual earning last fiscal, the Assam Circle of India Post is looking for a substantial jump in its revenue during 2013-14 on the back of a number of new initiatives.

“In 2012-13, the revenue earned by Assam Circle was Rs 133.53 crore compared to Rs 139.96 crore in 2011-12. This year we have already clocked revenue of Rs 118.24 crore between April and August and we hope to reach total revenue of Rs 160 crore by end of the financial year,” T Murthy, Chief Postmaster General, Assam Circle, said today.

Asked about the reasons behind the dip in the total revenue earned, he said many factors were responsible including loss of around 48 working days due to “social and political” factors.

He said 12 post offices under Assam Circle have been included for the pilot phase of the postal department’s Core Banking Solution (CBS) initiative, which will enable postal customers to access their savings bank accounts in any post office.

The post offices selected for the pilot project are Guwahati GPO, Dibrugarh HO, Golaghat HO, Tezpur HO, Nalbari HO, Sivasagar HO, Mariani HO, Mangaldoi HO, Tinsukia HO, Jorhat HO, Nagaon HO and Biswanath Chariali MDG.

“CBS at these places will be rolled out within two months. After successful implementation of CBS in these pilot offices, the other post offices of Assam Circle will also be covered under CBS in a phased manner,” Murthy said.

Assam is among six states across India selected for the pilot phase.
In addition, Assam has also been selected for the Rural-ICT project which has an ambitious plan for computerisation and networking of rural post offices (also called Branch Post Offices).

“A total of 375 BOs of Sivasagar Postal Division, comprising the three districts of Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat are the pilot offices for the Rural-ICT project for the Assam Circle,” Murthy said.
