The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Bill, 2013 Receives the Assent of the President Published in the Gazette of India as act no. 25 of 2013

The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Bill, 2013 has received the assent of the President of India. It has now been published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part-II, Section-1, dated the 19th September 2013 as Act No. 25 of 2013. 

Kumari Selja calls for complete eradication of manual scavenging 

The Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Kumari Selja has said that with the enactment of “The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Bill, 2012”, we will be able to completely eradicate the inhuman practice of manual scavenging from this country. Speaking at a function here today, she said that now it is upto all of us to ensure that the Bill is implemented in its letter and spirit. The function was organised by the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis to mark the passage of “The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Bill, 2012” by the Parliament of India.

Kumari Selja said that she reminded the representatives of the National and State Safai Karamchari Commissions of their important role of monitoring the implementation of the law. Likewise, she also urged the members of the civil society organisations to support the implementing authorities in identification of manual scavengers, their rehabilitation and demolition of the existing insanitary latrines. 

The Chairperson, National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, Smt. Kamla Gurjar, lauded the efforts of the Minister in getting the Bill passed by the Parliament. She said that this is a great victory and hoped to see results materialize in the near future. 

Chairpersons and members of the State Safai Karamchari Commissions, representatives of various National/State level Associations and other civil society organisations from various parts of the country attended the function.
