Canadian postal service to scrap door to door delivery

The Canadian postal service is phasing out home delivery over the next five years in a bid to stem financial losses.
Instead people will collect their post from community mail boxes.
Canada Post, which is government-owned but has a mandate to be self-financing, said it was suffering as customers switched to digital communications.
“We need to continue to ensure our costs are competitive because we are in a great big competitive world now,” Jon Hamilton, a spokesman for Canada Post said.
There was nostalgia from many on hearing the news. One man said “we just all look forward to our mail. Ever since you were a little kid, you just love your mail.”
The cost of a stamp will also go up by 50 percent and around 7,000 jobs will go at the postal service.
The postal workers’ union has called on Canadians to oppose the move.
The government opposition warned that the changes would harm elderly people who reply on post being brought to their home, particularly in the winter.
