The UPU Council of Administration formally accepted the Ivorian government’s invitation yesterday, Thursday 14 November, to host the two-day conference next year in the economic capital, Abidjan.
Bruno Koné, the Ivorian minister of post and information and communication technologies, thanked member countries for placing their confidence in his country.
"Africa is one of the next frontiers for the Post. Holding this strategy conference in Abidjan will give a major boost to postal sector development in Côte d’Ivoire,” said Koné.
UPU Director General Bishar A. Hussein welcomed the Council of Administration’s decision. "Côte d’Ivoire has expressed is commitment to organizing a successful Strategy Conference, and we are looking forward to meeting there to discuss the future of postal services.”
The UPU Strategy Conference is held midway between the meetings of Congress, the highest forum of the Union, to take stock of the current world postal strategy. UPU member countries adopted the latest Doha Postal Strategy in Qatar in 2012, to serve as the postal sector’s roadmap for the next four years.
Ten years after losing the 2004 Universal Postal Congress in Abidjan because of a civil crisis, Côte d’Ivoire is thrilled to have the opportunity to host another UPU event.
