HYDERABAD: The Bolarum Post Office
(Rashtrapati-Bolarum), which apart from serving locals, delivers mail
to the country's President during his southern sojourn at the
Rashtrapati Nilayam, is all set to get a facelift by January-end,
courtesy 'Project Arrow'.
The Bolarum postal employees have been delivering mail to the President for over six decades. As per postal department records, telegraph services were launched at the heritage building in 1860, while postal services began from 1950 onwards.
As the post office building is in a dilapidated condition (reported in these columns earlier), the central government has sanctioned Rs 10.50 lakh for taking up repairs as well as opening new counters.
"The Indian Post (AP unit) had sent proposals for renovating the building last year. The Centre responded positively and sanctioned Rs 10.50 lakh under 'Project Arrow'. The department of posts introduced 'Project Arrow' in 2008 to improve the India Post infrastructure across the country. Under the project, the exterior and interior of post offices will get a makeover," a senior postal department (Buildings) official told TOI.
Of the Rs 10.50 lakh, the postal department would spend Rs 5.99 lakh on civil works, including construction of a compound wall for the post office, Rs 1.45 lakh for branding and remaining Rs 3.06 lakh for refurbishing sales counters. The civil works have already started. The contractor has to complete the work by January 31. Otherwise, the funds provided under 'Project Arrow' would lapse, the official said.
Along with Bolarum post office, the central government has also sanctioned funds under 'Project Arrow' for renovating 10 more post offices, including those at Patancheru, Saifa, Golconda, Karwan, Bowenpally, Gandhi Nagar, Himmatnagar, IDA Jeedimetla, Lalaguda and Sainikpuri, the official said.
